Thinkage (defined in the book as “the result of mental excretion”) presents a bittersweet account of family life full of love and irony, compassion and whimsy. Nothing is off-limits here, as Pa shares with his son the benefits of underachievement, turns pooping into a game and helps Grampa to build a pyramid that attracts energy.

Nothing comes from nowhere, Grampa believed, because something always originates somewhere. Whenever his son exhibited obstinacy, resilience, opinionated pigheadedness, Grampa said that these qualities Pa had inherited from his mother.
But as soon as his son demonstrated wit, rational thinking and sophistication, Grampa only smiled and said nothing, because wasn’t it obvious where that came from?

Book of Thinkage Dmitry Zlotsky Books

Zlotsky’s ‘Book of Thinkage’ is a light-hearted and whimsical look at three generations of a family, most of whom are eccentric yet lovable. It is exploratory prose venturing into the nebulous no-man’s-zone between fiction and non-fiction.

A recurring theme is family -- how does wisdom pass down from generation to generation? Clearly there is love in this extended family, such as the playful repartee between the grandparents in which Grampa playfully engineers a way to get Gramma to go out and buy herself a present so that he can nap, and the fun inquisitiveness of a boy asking Grampa about power emanating from pyramids. The book has photos of the six characters, two from each generation, at different points in their lives, so in this respect, it could be viewed as a personal memoir of sorts, or an extended family auto-biography? There is a Russian approach to naming, not unlike Pushkin or Chekhov or Tolstoy, such that each character may have a slightly different name for each other character, but Zlotsky thankfully makes this easy for readers to handle. Eccentricities abound: for example, Grampa’s bathroom has the word ‘hands’ next to the hand towels, and ‘face’ next to face towels, why, to avoid confusion.

Clearly the older generation values a playful and humble approach to philosophy. ‘Thinking’ is purposeful mental activity from a premise to a conclusion, while ‘thinkage’ is “never going forward or backward.” So what exactly is that? Well we're not quite sure at first. Think of it as a fun Sunday walk into a South Mountain reservation-land of relaxed cloudiness, with a focus on domestic life: cabinets and dishes and kitchen conversations and inter-generational phone conversations, a desk with an overly-efficient handling of space. Zlotsky says that sometimes “making no sense makes sense”. He illustrates his paradox with a story about a general, hired to protect the people, who wins the war and gains power and popularity, but ultimately endangers everybody’s liberty. A lesson, according to Zlotsky, is that “a great strategist knows when to lose.”

Zlotsky handles language with a wink of playfulness. He coined the word 'phewed' (the past tense of ‘phew’?) What is ‘thinkage’? It is the "process and result of an intellectually charged cerebral excretion". So he’s in league with Stephen Colbert in inventing terms like ‘truthiness’. What kind of day is it? A weatherful day. He delights in breaking rules; for example, his introductory chapter is physically the third chapter, which he aptly titles “Tardy Intro”.

The style alternates from lighthearted humor to occasional sarcasm. Accordingly, the purpose of education is not to learn content and develop skills but rather to “be around smart people … see how they operate … learn their tricks.” The back cover has a nutritional-type label -- as if the book was a consumer product -- which says “Intellectual Nutrition Facts”, and describes “mental ingredients” and a “% Daily Value”.

Readers seeking a traditional type story, with a protagonist and antagonist and tension-filled plot, won’t find that here. Rather, the strength of this book is an intimate examination of multi-generational family life, a loving family with lessons and wisdom for the younger generation. Recommended.

Book of Thinkage Dmitry Zlotsky Books Reviews

A wonderfully poetic journey through the intimacies of a family's life. I laughed out loud at several of Grampa's observations, and was choked up at the end when the same patriarch got sick and struggled to express his most fundamental philosophy with his beloved family. Zlotsky's love of language is obvious as he spins a delightful web of word play and meta meaning with each sentence. Recommended for anyone who has ever appreciated the irreverent wisdom of their elders, noticed the sublime in the mundane, or just simply loves life.
I wanted to laugh and to cry turning page after page of this profoundly kind and witty book. It is such a loving tribute to our ailing elderly parents, who in accordance with the circle of life are turning into our children, and to the loved ones who have already left us. These memories are so precious full of simple wisdom, casual, every day jokes, little arguments, small and big weaknesses -- we only now realize how much we miss them. We all catch ourselves when we subconsciously do something exactly how our parents did it, we recall those days when we thought that we will never, ever, be like our parents. Finally, it dawns on us that the cliche "circle of life" has a true, real meaning. This book preserves something very special for our children and grandchildren, in the hope that they will understand why they often act and think in particular way, which is rooted in our ancestors.
This is a lovely book to read, This book is based on true story of a family and they it functions
While going through the book you will feel the connection with the characters as your own family members and those short funny stories remind you of your own family The most it actually reminded me of my Grandpa, and his thoughts which he use share when we visited him.

The story telling in the book is simple and so real it instantly makes an connection due to its simplicity and reality, and wants to know more about Grampa and what he is thinking next. The book will make you happy and sad at the same time and make you realize the importance of the family. Though our parents and grandparents are not the rich and famous or any motivational speaker but with their life experiences they have an great wisdom to pass in their small thoughts to pass upon us.
